Earth Hour

by Confuddled @ 2008-03-29 - 17:06:59

Don't know how many people realise that today (29th March 2008) between the hours 8pm and 9pm - it's Earth Hour. It's a campaign organised by the World Wildlife Fund and all around the world, we're encouraged to turn off our lights for 1 hour to demonstrate support for action on climate change. You can read more about it on the WWF website (better than me trying to summarise it here) www.wwf.org.uk

So, how many of you will be taking part?

No I won't be taking part. What a ridiculous idea!!! The global warming industry never fails to surprise me with it's attempts to keep itself in the news. Global warming is a natural pheomneon which has been in existence as long as the world itself, as has global cooling!!! What will happen when the world starts to cool down again? Is there going to be an industry develop to get us to produce more heat?

What industry exactly? I think you will find with a bit of research that you are wrong.
the point is that in eth short space of time mankind has occupied this earth, most especially since the industrial revolution- we have exploited its resources, filled its sea with toxic waste and plastic, ignored the pleas of indigenous peoples, and contributed to the extinction of countless species.
I for one support any and all action that brings awareness of the crises that is proven, by numerous scientists, particularly glacioligists http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glaciology
to be happening. Not only to earth either.

What industry? How about the thousands of energy consultants, the thousands of people who have jumped on the bandwagon and run around the world going to conferences and then decide to tell everybody else that running round the world is bad for us and that we should not take a holida abroad. People look at this sort of thing as an opportunity, keep it to the forefront of the media and then build it up well beyond where it should be.

Of course global warming is happening, but it is a natural phenomenon. Over the millenia this country has been covered in ice and also has been rainforest and jungle. Where were the people when that was happening? Who was to blame for that? Why should any blame be attached?

I agree that we should not be wasteful with the worlds resources to a point. I also agree that mankind has driven some species to extinction. That is what happens when you are the alpha species if you are not careful.

If you really want to campaign about and believe in something then look at an individual problem, don't jump on the bandwagon of global warming and then hang every other problem in the world on it. How about the destruction of the rainforests, that is a real worry as this beautiful habitat is being systematically destroyed along with the complete eco-system that goes with it.

You doom-mongers darken my day. The world is what the world is and it will heat up and cool down irrespective of anything we do. By the way, I have done my research and studied the evidence of human interference witht he climate and I find it far from proven. I may have a different perspective to you but that does not make me wrong as you stated.

it always surprises me that some people are still denying global warming! Any initiative that highlights it sounds good to me. However, as this is the first I have heard of it, it may not have been so well publicized! Do they mean GMT with the 8 - 9pm?

I found out about it when I first tried to use "google" this morning and then Moonwoman mentioned it in her blog. You're right, it's not been that well publicized.

In terms of the time - it's local time. They don't seem to be synchronising the event.

I did it, I only stumbled on it by accident, but it's a great idea. Maybe next year more people will be aware!

We do Earth hour here every day. I use candles for light at night. I find electric light too harsh unless I am reading at night and then I will turn a lamp on....I normally do all my reading during the day and am too tired at night to read. Most nights I just sit and enjoy the peace and quiet and the company of my dog and two cats. The hydro company doesn't make a lot of money off us, and as soon as we can manage it....we'll be using an alternate sorce of energy and asking hydro to take us off their line. I look very forward to that day.

Must admit I had forgotten how wonderful and peaceful it is to have candles lit in the evenings. I used to do it fairly often some years ago - think I will do it more often. Earth hour should be everyday rather than a 1xyear occurance.
