Drum Journey

by Confuddled @ 2008-01-26 - 20:26:47

Mentioned in a previous blog that last weekend I spent doing my Reiki II. My teacher is also the first person in the UK to teach Reiki drumming, and on the Sunday as we were due to finish early, she conducted a drum journey session for me. Now, I really didn't know what to expect as I hadn't heard of Reiki drumming before. I lay down on the coach, all relaxed, and with an open mind about what the next 20 minutes would hold. She said that the experience would be very individual - some people just felt relaxed; some experienced vivid dreams; others felt that parts of their body were being pulled... So to the rythmic drum beat, I wandered off in a meditative state.

Well, afterwards, all I can say it was very relaxing and I was surprised by the pictures, symbols that kept flashing in my minds eye. It was like I was having a strange dream but not in a disturbing way. Although it was relaxing, I felt full of energy and awake afterwards.

There have been a few blogs from my Friends about dreams so I thought I'd try and describe some of what I "saw". Like dreams, although I can still clearly see some of the pictures, it's actually hard to describe, but I'll give it a go...

In the beginning I was asked to walk across a bridge and once I crossed the bridge, the journey would begin. My bridge was small, wooden and almost fairytale like. On the other side, I was greeted by a dragonfly darting to and fro in front of me. It's torso was a brilliant metallic greeny/blue colour - very beautiful. It then flew to a lake where it grew in size - either it grew or I shrunk, but I think it grew. It then came over and taking my hands, lifted me up into the sky. The dragonfly then disappeared but I didn't fall to earth - I kept on gliding and witnessed the rest of the journey from this level.
I came across a moonlit lake, with forests surrounding it and mountains in the background. Everything was quite and still. In the corner of my minds eye I saw a bear. This bit is hard to describe but the bear didn't stay long, it appeared and then disappeared. I knew the bear's message to me was about not underestimating my inner strength, it had served me well and would continue to do so. There was also a message about being clear of who I am, where and what my boundaries were and living my life accordingly.
I travelled through the trees and came across a road which snaked it's way up the mountain side. It was still dark but there was a light ahead which I kept following. Again, for me it was symbolic about my life - I am on my path although it feels like there are lots of twists and turns, it is heading in the right direction. Also, although I can't always see the path or road ahead, I need to just trust that I am being guided.
Oh, and somewhere along the journey - not sure now at what point, I came across a large gentle eye looking at me. I knew that it was an elephant although at no point did I see the elephant.
There was more, but as said, it's actually difficult to put into words the journey. I'm not sure what it all means, what the dragonfly symbolised or the elephant's eye. I am clear about the bear and the road. I feel the nature scene was just a reminder that I'm at my happiest when I'm out in nature and that I should do more about getting out there.

Anyway, that was my drum journey - who needs psychedelic drugs!!!

I have many tarot packs one of my favourites is the Druid Animal Oracle -the Bear features in this, known as 'Art' or 'Arsht' it symbolises primal power and intuition coupled with instinct. The bear is representative of the spiritual warrior.

The following is an extract from an article on the symbolism of the dragonfly...

"Dragonflies represent the powers of light and transformation, and the ability to see through illusion."

I am unsure about the elephant without looking that up aswell, but at a guess I would say it symbolises strength, loyalty and a strong sense of family, longevity and again primal power.

don't know if that is of any help :)

It has, thank you! :) When I'm feeling less tired, I may try meditate on the journey and see if any clarification comes through.

I dont know why this is called Reiki Drumming? Usui, the Doctor who gave us the gift of Reiki ( your teacher will have taught you about him I hope?) never taught anything like that . It sounds like a shamanic journey of sorts..sorry dont want to sound to critical, its just there is so much nonsense bandied around about Reiki and people seem to be getting ripped off as well. I just hope she didnt charge you a fortune for it..
If you like I can recommend some good books about Reiki and also the journey you are speaking of, you can do it again on your own with a drumming CD if its something you want to use. One of these days I will post about Reiki as I think there is a lot of dis-information out there. If your teacher gave you her lineage, then maybe she can tell you where she got the "drumming " from? anyway Reiki is a great gift, I hope it has helped you in lots of ways, it changes everything you know :) ;)

My Reiki II attunement was in the Usui tradition and in accordance with the Reiki Federation. The drumming wasn't part of what I was taught and at no point was it said or implied that the drumming was something used by Dr Usui. As we finished earlier than scheduled, she asked me whether I would like to experience the drumming - I wasn't charged for it.
My teacher uses the drumming at the end of a traditional Reiki healing session as a way of relaxing and amplifying the Reiki. I know a bit about shamanism and there is a difference in how it feels.
I agree there is so much nonsense being bandied about Reiki. For quite a few years I resisted Reiki as I thought it was another new age fad. But Spirit kept prodding and eventually I relented. Having said that, I can't however but think that I doubt Dr Usui meant for Reiki to be rigid and inflexible. I do believe it is about intention. For a lot of people they like the rythmic sound of drumming. So if the intention of my teacher is pure, loving and light, then what harm is there? Her intention is to use the drum as a way of sending Reiki to her client. She doesn't advertise her practice and all her clients are by word of mouth - she's kept very busy. Not sure she'd still be in business if it wasn't working at some level.

Thank you for your concern that I may have been ripped off and I look forward to reading your post about Reiki. As you say, it is a great gift and it really does change everything!
Much Love & Light,
M

Thats great! I am glad she sounds very much like my teacher/master, she relies on word of mouth as well. Its just we have heard such horor stories lately including a traing given by an alleged master whose very words upon her intruductionary session were -I have power over you..- the people involved left assuming they were becoming indoctrinated into some sort of cult . I first heard of Reiki when I lived in NZ years ago, I couldnt afford to do it back then, and have since managed to get both attunements, reading a great book about intuitional reiki just now and realising there are many different branches from the tree.
I also used shamanic techniques but for my own issues, and as a key to getting into deeper stuff, but again I have read and heard about some dodgy goings on with that. I pferef to read about*real * shamans these days anyway!. I am glad its going so well for you and your teacher sounds like she is a good un, which is what is really important well done for manifesting that encounter!. I love the synchronicity it brings into peoples lives, anyway starting to get all evangelical here,:) love and light to you as well xx Merm
