Colposcopy Update

by Confuddled @ 2008-01-12 - 11:59:10

Back in December I wrote about how I was waiting for my Colposcopy results and it had dawned on me that despite my words (and my refusal to admit to it), I was actually scared and worried. Well, results have eventually come back this morning and so thought I'd give you an update.

Basically I do need to go back. They have found pre-cancerous cells although the good news is it is still very much at the early stages. Technically one-third of the cells taken during the biopsy show signs of abnormal cells. There seems to be 3 levels 1-3 (3 being serious) - I'm at level 1. So, although it means that there is a very low risk of the cells progressing into cancer, their policy is still to treat all levels. Treatment is by "cold coagulation" which hopefully means it wont hurt!

My appointment is scheduled for the 30th January but I may need to re-arrange it. But hopefully, that will be it. Downside is I'll probably be called for more regular smear test and I really don't like them!

I'm a big baby when it comes to things like this so hats off to you for dealing with it and facing it , my heart is with you -sounds as though there is nothing to worry about and it will be over and done with very soon my lovely :) I know it's so easy to say 'don't worry' but I honestly don't believe you need to, caught early is the right way to go

Thanks for the comfort. I know it's good that they've caught it early and least it hasn't developed into cancerous cells. There are women who aren't so lucky.

As Wendy says, catching something like this early is really important. If they know there's a problem they can do something about it. Healing hugs coming your way *hugs* and don't forget you're among friends here!

Thanks for the healing hugs. I know I'm among friends and each day I still get amazed at the support that exists in blogland.

Glad you caught it early..and sorry that you had all that worry
Despite its name, cold coagulation uses heat to destroy abnormal cells. The procedure takes just a few minutes and is usually done under local anaesthetic. This helps to numb your cervix, but you may still feel a slight period-like pain during treatment. The doctor places a hot probe on your cervix for about 30 seconds to burn away any abnormal tissue. ...so i am informed....

and then

DONE

it would be nothing compared to the pain we men get when we have man flu

Is there no end to your talents and knowledge? Thanks for the info. Least when I get there I'll know what to expect rather than being surprised. I had originally thought it meant they sort of froze the cells thus killing them.

Sorry you have to deal with this worry...but you are brave talking about it and facing up to things. I hope things turn out well. It sounds reasonably optimistic!

And wow....I had no idea Jack was a Gynocologist!!!x

I'm sure it will all turn out well.
Talking about it online is somehow far easier than talking about it face to face with friends. So least through the blog I can open up to my fears rather than surpress them.

Thank goodness for the NHS , and , nothing original to say which is why I did'nt comment before but I can only echo what others have said , that it's very unlikely to be anything worth worrying about though of course you will a bit ; good wishes and good luck , ~ martin

See, it did help to go and have it done, and catch those abnormal cells early. If you had waited... no, let's not go there.

Haven't had cold coagulation but it's 1000 times better to have that done - especially since it's not as painful as manflu *BOL* - than the alternative.

Be strong, dear, and go through with it. It's important!

xx
