Myths about growing up

by Confuddled @ 2007-11-15 - 22:28:05

When I was a child, I had various impressions of what being grown up would be like. Now that I am supposed to be grown up, I look back and think, life isn't quite like I thought it would be.

Myth 1 : When you grow up you'll feel all grown up. Actually, I don't. Yes, my thought and views have been refined over time, but I don't "feel" like I thought I would "feel". I don't feel like I'm 41 years old (and that's not me going through a midlife crises either!)

Myth 2 : When you grow up you'll stop getting spots on your face (or anywhere else). My skin has erupted recently and I would give a spotty teenager a run for their money!!! Finding out this is a myth, really pisses me off. Had acne late as a teenager and looked forward to growing out of it. Huh!! Sorry, don't feel particularly attractive at the moment and not too sure the erupted skin has made me look any worse!

Myth 3 : When you grow up you'll become sensible. Nope, ain't true! I was probably more sensible as a teenager.

Myth 4 : When you grow up you'll be able to take what life throws at you in your stride. Again, finding this one was a myth, pissed me off. Life doesn't make any more sense to me as an adult plus I feel more screwed up than I ever did as a teenager.

Well the above are just some of the ones that annoy me the most. What are your myths about growing up?

Myth Four is the one that gets me...I'm sure I coped better with whatever came at me as a child before I began thinking about it all in a more supposedly adult way!

I think that myth three is an interesting one. Wise old birds and all that! I feel i have lost some of the wisdom I had when younger rather than the other way around! Look at parents and their children! Kids know what's what don't they...parents on the other hand....maybe can't see things quite as clearly as their kids because of the baggage we accumulate through our lives!

You're right about the baggage tht we accumulate. I also think as adults we restrict ourselves more than we did as kids.

LOL more screwed up than ever? Yeh that's me..but isn't it nice to know that we are not alone in feeling that - that's the problem with getting older you feel exactly the same inside......still that eternal teenager :)

You're right that it's good to know that others feel the same way.

1, 3 and 4 apply to me too! I'm the same age as you are, and I don't feel "grown up" or "sensible" at all! I think life would be boring if we adults couldn't maintain a bit of childishness in us ;)

As for the spots: have you seen a dermatologist about it? There's all kinds of creams (with fruit acids, I think) that can help. Or try cutting down on greasy foods and/or chocolate.

I feel just like you. I'm 39 and cannot belive I will be 40 in a few months. I feel more like 29 or younger. I wish I had known what I know now and had the job I have now at 29. I also still get spots!! My mum used to tell me when you get older you get less hairy, soooo wrong!! I seem to be growing more hair!
